FEATURE PERFORMER: Taj Mahal
There are people who play music, and then there are artists who use music as their medium. Blues legend Taj Mahal is such a musician.
In the course of his unique 30-year career, Taj has embraced the blues, folk, reggae, R&B, gospel, rock'n'roll, Zydeco, Caribbean, African and Hawaiian music, and has worked with and influenced some of the greatest musicians of our time. Mick Jagger, John Lee Hooker, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and Keb' Mo' are just a few of the stars who tell their own stories of Taj. Others recount tales of touring in an African war zone; of putting together revolutionary bands; and of playing "inside a song" with Taj.
Taj's lifelong quest has been to get closer to his roots music. Realising as a child that the songs he was hearing bore fragments of ancestral songs, he strove to popularise this authentic music, often in the face of crippling opposition from a blinkered music industry.
Off-stage, the double Grammy award-winner steps out of the shadows and invites the reader into his private life. He tells of personal tragedies previously not revealed. His immediate family talk of their brother, their husband and their father with frank sincerity. The result is this astonishing but, above all, honest account of the life of a bluesman.

MARIA MULDAUR
Blues veteran Maria Muldaur will join the Festival as she tours behind her much acclaimed 2001 CD, "Richland Woman Blues." A duo and trio "guest" album, the production taps the early twentieth-century songbook, and features Taj Mahal, as well as Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews and John Sebastian.
Many fans remember Muldaur for her rendition of "Midnight at the Oasis," a cut from her debut album, the 1974 "Maria Muldaur." Since then she has recorded 18 albums, all the while refining her ability to interpret early blues songs, many of which were made famous by female singers, such as Memphis Minnie and Ma Rainey.

MUSIC MAKER BLUES REVIVAL
The Music Maker Relief Foundation, based in Hillsborough, NC, raises funds to help grass-roots Southern Blues artists meet expenses for medical and daily needs. The MMRF will be represented by Cootie Stark, an authentic Piedmont Blues guitarist. Stark learned his trade from medicine show musicians, and played for many years as a street musician in the Carolinas.
Other Music Makers artists performing: "Cool John" Ferguson, Beverly "Guitar" Watkins, Neal Pattman, and "Mudcat."
