"SOUL QUEEN OF NEW ORLEANS" to Highlight Portsmouth Blues Festival: PORTSMOUTH, NH - Rhythm and blues singer Irma Thomas, one of the great icons of New Orleans music, will perform at the 16th annual Portsmouth Blues Festival on August 18.

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Rhythm and blues singer Irma Thomas, one of the great icons of New Orleans music, will perform at the 16th annual Portsmouth Blues Festival on August 18.

Magic Slim and the Teardrops, known for their Chicago-style blues, will also be featured.

THE PORTSMOUTH BLUES FESTIVAL
The oldest blues festival in New England - will once again take place on the Strawbery Banke Museum grounds, on Marcy Street, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Fans will be treated to both electric and acoustic blues from 11am to 7pm.

"A lot of folks don't realize that when the Rolling Stones came out with their version of 'Time Is On My Side,' they were much influenced by Irma's cover of the song, which had just come out," says TJ Wheeler, executive director of the event. "And Magic Slim and the Teardrops, they're one of the last - if not the best - of the pure Chicago-style blues bands around." Still working on the roster for the Festival, Wheeler added that Geoff Maldaur, Roscoe Gordon, and Ann Rabson (of the Uppity Blues Women) have just been signed.

TJ Wheeler and the Smokers will also perform.

The 2001 Portsmouth Blues Festival is presented by Fleet Bank, with major promotional support provided by WMUR Channel 9. The Festival is a production of the Blues Bank Collective, in partnership with the Strawbery Banke Museum.
